Sartre says in his Sketch for a Throey of The Emotions that an emotion is a change of the world. According to him, when we want to or have to do something but we cannot do it, we feel some kind of tension. It is so demanding that we cannot usually put up with it. So, we put ourselves into an emotional state in order to change the object.
